Giant Food is a supermarket chain in the United States and Canada. Founded in 1939, the company had revenue of $14.6 billion and more than 100 stores in three countries as of January 2018.

Giant Food Stores operates as a discount grocery retailer in the United States under the name Giant. It is three-generation retail grocery stores, owned by the family of Lewis Golapin. As of 2018, it had over 1,700 locations in 45 states and the District of Columbia, with about 100 under development for 2019. Championed as an alternate to traditional supermarkets, Giant has been criticized for its price advantage over smaller and independent grocers that cater to more affluent households.

Recently, I found a new store near my home town that’s super convenient for groceries and soul food. On the east side of Long Beach, an independent supermarket chain called "Giant Food" is located at 5106 N. Santa Monica Ave., Los Angeles. It's pretty easy to find your way around this large mall. Here are some stores you can shop at in this city center:

Giant Grocery offers fresh organic grocery products, along with seasonal staples like bacon seasonings and sauces. You can also shop their extensive line of frozen foods such as waffles, chicken pieces, and salad mixers, which they offer online ordering. They have a good selection of seafood seasonings, but if you're looking to do nothing else than eat local seafood, check out their deli salad bar instead. Their deli sandwich platter features hand-cut sandwiches packed with Mediterranean vegetables, meatless chicken slices, cilantro dressing, and more. The deli can be found on the first two floors of the building at 7400 S. Pacific Coast Highway West between North Park Way and Sepulveda Boulevard. There's also the grocery basement space at the same location where you can locate Whole Foods Market. Giant Food has been there since 1965, serving up convenience stores, and eventually became part of the larger Stop Shop Co. This giant food store is now owned by another company, which was started by Ralph Merritt III who purchased it from his father, Jerry Merritt. When he died in 1976, Ralph decided that the business should be carried by a partner, and so began working with his son Michael Merritt to become the owner of a different deli brand of Deluxxo. A few years later, the family opened its own deli concept called Gourmet Delivers in 1978. In 1985, the delis went under, until Ralph merged the concept with the original DELXO. Later on Ralph bought back the delis name in 1988.

After some time traveling over Los Angeles, I came across Good Food Near me, a community based organization that operates Good Food Locations across America on behalf of the nation's most vulnerable people in need. These locations include supermarkets and delis that provide affordable grocery to low income families or individuals living in poor communities. One area that stands out among these stores is one at 935 South San Diego St., Suite 100. It's located just one mile south of Hollywood Blvd. Another notable location is 2200 Woodley Street, Suite 109, which serves the East L.A. area. Both of these centers offer a wide variety of goods including produce, eggs, milk, dairy products, health supplements, fresh meats, poultry, bakery goods and much more. Many locations have also added fresh fruit and vegetable options to make shopping easier. For those needing extra help, this type of grocery may not be enough to purchase their daily essentials. So far in 2021, one major factor contributing to their hardships is the pandemic. Due to the economic downturn, many companies laid off their employees temporarily. Others had to close down due to capacity constraints. Although unemployment still remains high, businesses are finding ways to stay afloat. As long as people have jobs to pay rent or mortgages, they will have more money to spend. If employers don't have any, then they will turn to workers' rights to work overtime to save them some money. Some businesses are even trying to offer flexible hours. For example, Kroger provides free meals for lunch, dinner, or after work on Wednesdays through Fridays. They're able to accommodate needs with a maximum 20 hours. Even though California doesn't allow large grocery stores to provide SNAP benefits for people of all incomes, they did allow small stores to do so that helped over 90 families to get their needed groceries.

I came across numerous other stores in the neighborhood that are very helpful for everyone living in the area. They are extremely accessible and affordable. Plus, some are better than others, depending on what you need and want. My favorite is the Greengrocer in Encinitas Village. They offer bulk fresh produce that includes everything like fruits, vegetables, fish, etc. They also have a big selections of fresh beef and turkey items as well as many snacks, beverages, and drinks. They are one of those places where you can come together at a common interest and accomplish many things. Also, they offer many health and wellness services like blood pressure screenings (they often have appointments available) and weight loss consultations.

Another great place for buying produce is the Fresh Market near our apartment complex. We live next door to this site, and we enjoy picking up fresh produce there at least twice a week. The prices can be a little bit higher than Giant Food, considering the quality, but they are worth every dollar spent.
